INNOVIA -European patient forum-
October 27-28 2005, The Hague (the Netherlands) by Dr. Harrie van Haaster. Objectives:
Research, both clinical and social, is an important resource for health care consumers of all sorts and their organizations: in helping develop new forms of treatment and support, in establishing what new therapies have to offer, in clarifying and synthesizing the concerns and experiences of members, and in advocacy work. In reality, experiences are often less than positive. On the one hand there is a good deal of mistrust of researchers among patient organizations. On the other hand many researchers neither understand the concerns of patients nor have learned to respect the knowledge that comes from living with an illness, perhaps over many years . How can these problems be overcome? What can patient organizations reasonably expect of research? How can they learn to use its results? The workshop will focus on ‘ what is involved in developing an effective and mutually rewarding relationship with researchers?’ On the basis of presentations drawn from different areas of health care and different European countries, the workshop will draw practical conclusions that associations can use in their future work. A written report will be produced after the workshop.
